Mr. President,

Denmark welcomes the delegation of Canada and its presentation today, commending its commitment to the rights of indigenous peoples and women’s rights.

Violence against women in Canada disproportionally affects indigenous women, and adequate and comparable levels of services and protection must be ensured for women and girls in all parts of the country.

Denmark recommends Canada to adopt a national action plan on violence against women and girls, consulting in line with UNDRIP on specific provisions for indigenous women.

Lack of adequate housing in Inuit and First Nations communities increases the need for emergency shelter..

Denmark recommends the government to take immediate steps to ensure safe emergency shelter with adequate support in Northern communities for those seeking protection from violence, in line with needs.

Finally, Denmark recommends the Government to ratify the OPCAT.

I thank you.
