UPR41: Denmark gives UPR-recommendations to Finland
Universal Periodic Review, 41th session
Human Rights Council
UPR of Finland, 9 November 2022
Intervention by Denmark
[Check against delivery]
Mr. President,
Denmark welcomes the delegation of Finland and thanks it for its presentation.
We welcome the positive developments on the rights of indigenous peoples in Finland, including the guideline memorandum jointly drafted by the Ministry of Justice and the Sámi Parliament.
We are concerned that not all necessary steps are being taken in the fulfilment of human rights obligations in relation to the Sámi people, for example the regional disparity in protection against gender-based violence.
Denmark recommends Finland to:
1. Ratify the ILO169 Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, thereby committing to uphold the full measures of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
2. Amend the Sámi Parliament Act in order to ensure the appropriate political rights for the Sámi people.
Denmark wishes Finland a successful review.
I thank you.
