UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
49th Session
Item 4: General Debate
Statement by Denmark
Denmark align with the EU statement.
We also refer to our previous statements strongly condemning Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine, as well as Nordic-Baltic statements on Belarus, Ethiopia, Myanmar, South Sudan and Syria.
We are deeply concerned about reports of human rights violations in Xinjiang and Tibet. We urge China to ensure unfettered access for the High Commissioner during the planned visit, including in Xinjiang.
In Iran, arrest, imprisonment and long-term detention of civil society activists is of great concern. We call for fair trials, prohibition of torture and proper conditions for prisoners.
On Saudi Arabia, we are deeply concerned by recent mass executions and reiterate our strong opposition to death penalty. We also note with concern the persecution of civil society activists.
We are deeply concerned about gross and systematic human rights violations in DPRK, and call for the respect for international human rights law.
We strongly oppose Israel’s illegal expansion of settlements in the oPt, and evictions in East Jerusalem. We urge the Palestinian Authority to respect the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful association and assembly.
We are concerned by the human rights situation in Egypt, including shrinking civic space and the freedom of expression.
Finally, we call for the release of arbitrarily detained persons in Bahrain, including the Danish-Bahraini citizen Mr. Al-Khawaja.
Thank you.
