HRC50: Denmark urges the Belarusian Government to effectively investigate human rights violations and to release all political prisoners
UN Human Rights Council
50th session
Item 4
Interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus
28-29 June 2022
Statement by Denmark
Mr. President,
Denmark aligns itself with the statement by the European Union and the Nordic-Baltic countries.
We thank the Special Rapporteur for the report and reiterate our strong support for the mandate.
We are deeply concerned by the continued deterioration of the human rights situation in Belarus, including the potentially expanded use of the death penalty.
There is no sign of perpetrators being held accountable for the Belarusian Government’s extensive and sustained actions to crush dissent and repress political opponents, civil society and independent media. This points to a situation of complete impunity in Belarus for violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
We condemn these and other systematic human rights violations, and we urge the Belarusian Government to effectively investigate human rights violations and to release all political prisoners.
Furthermore, we condemn the role of Belarus in Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.
Madame Special Rapporteur, how can we better support independent media in Belarus?
Thank you.
