HRC57: Denmark addresses the human rights of Indigenous Peoples and the situations in Ukraine, Libya, Yemen, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso and Saudi Arabia
UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
57th Session
Item 2
Interactive dialogue with the High Commissioner for Human Rights
Intervention by Denmark
President,
At the start of this session, Denmark together with Greenland reaffirms our full and firm commitment to the rights of Indigenous Peoples, who are fighting discrimination, land dispossessions, shrinking civic space, and severe negative consequences of climate change in all parts of the world. We must accelerate our joint efforts if we are to succeed in protecting and advancing their rights.
On other matters of concern, Russia’s illegal war of aggression in Ukraine remains a flagrant violation of the UN Charter, and Denmark condemns in the strongest terms Russia’s atrocities, including those against Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructures.
Furthermore, Denmark urges all Parties in Libya and Yemen to fully uphold international human rights law. We call upon the Houthis to release UN human rights- and humanitarian workers, and to facilitate access to all human rights- and humanitarian actors.
Denmark also calls upon authorities in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso to ensure unrestricted and unhindered access to development and humanitarian assistance.
And finally, while recognizing progress made on inter alia women’s rights, we encourage Saudi Arabia to further improve the human rights situation, especially in regards to restrictions on civic space, freedom of expression and use of the death penalty.
Denmark aligns with the EU statement.
