HRC49: In urgent debate, Denmark calls on Russia to stop its illegal and meaningless war in Ukraine

Human Rights Council, 49th session
Urgent debate on the human rights situation in Ukraine stemming from the Russian aggression
Statement by Denmark
Delivered by Amb. Morten Jespersen

Mr. President,
Denmark aligns itself with the statement by the European Union. We are deeply alarmed about Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine.

We have seen the Ukrainian people bravely stand up against Russia’s military machine. Our message is loud and clear: Russia must stop its illegal and meaningless war in Ukraine. Russia must agree to an immediate ceasefire, withdraw its troops and return to the negotiating table.

This is not a matter of the West against Russia. This is Russia against the international rules-based system. Russia goes against the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and international law, including human rights, which makes it a matter for every state, and a matter of enforcing the international rules, which protect us all.
We welcome the call by an unprecedented large number of UN experts on Russia to end their aggression against Ukraine and to stop the violations of human rights.

We must continue to help Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, with everything we can. And this Council must act to ensure accountability for these heinous violations.
Thank you.
