Intervention by Denmark

[Check against delivery]

Denmark welcomes the delegation of Iceland and thanks it for its presentation.

We commend Iceland for its ratification of OPCAT and the Istanbul Convention. We welcome the Government’s commitment to establish a national human rights institution.

However, we remain concerned about the continued increase of reported cases of sexual and gender-based violence, particularly against women and girls. We are also concerned about insufficient diversity in the media landscape.

Denmark therefore recommends Iceland to:

1. Establish training programmes for law enforcement officials, prosecutors and judges on sexual and gender-based violence with the aim to increase the rate of convictions.

2. Promote the development of a more diverse media supply with the aim to further strengthen democratic debate.

Denmark wishes Iceland a successful review.

I thank you.
