UPR25: Denmark's statement on Swaziland, May 2016

Human Rights Council
UPR 25th Session
Recommendations from Denmark to Swaziland
May 2016

Mr. President,

Denmark welcomes the delegation of Swaziland and thanks it for its presentation today. We would like to commend Swaziland for its constructive engagement in the UPR process and for having demonstrated progress in the protection and promotion of human rights since its last review.

Denmark was pleased to note that Swaziland during its first UPR accepted recommendations to ratify the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture.

We also welcome the information provided in your national report, that there are ongoing efforts to take the optional protocol through the necessary steps of ratification as articulated by the Constitution in Section 238. We would be grateful it the delegation of Swaziland would elaborate on status and prospects for approval of the instrument through an Act of Parliament or through a joint sitting of both chambers of parliament.

Denmark recommends that the Government of Swaziland intensifies its efforts to ratify the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment.

We wish you a successful UPR.

Thank you, Mr. President.
