Human Rights Council
29th Special Session on the human rights implications of the crisis in Myanmar
12 February 2021
Statement by Minister for Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Mr. Jeppe KOFOD

Madam President,
Denmark aligns itself with the EU statement. I strongly condemn the coup in Myanmar.

The election results must be respected, the democratically elected government reinstated, and Parliament reconvened.
This Council must now contribute to prevent further serious violations of fundamental rights.

I urge the Myanmar military to uphold its responsibility to protect human rights - particularly to respect the human rights of peaceful demonstrators, their freedom of expression and of peaceful assembly. I also call for unrestricted humanitarian access.

Denmark will suspend all direct development cooperation with the now illegitimate government. But Denmark will continue to support the civil society of Myanmar.

We must stand together to put pressure on the Myanmar military to uphold its human rights obligations, to release political leaders and civil society activists, and to ensure a return to democracy.

We must stand together in solidarity with the people of Myanmar.
Thank you.
