Dialogue with Chairperson-elect of the Third Committee

Nordic-Baltic Intervention delivered by Denmark

[Check against delivery]

Mdm. President,

I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic countries: Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden and my own country, Denmark.

We would like to thank the Chairperson-elect of the Third Committee, Her Excellency Ms. Katalin Annamária Bogyay for meeting with us today, as a concrete way of bridging our human rights work in Geneva and New York.

The Nordic-Baltic countries firmly believe in the need to ensure cooperation, complementarity, and coherence across the UN human rights pillar, not least between the Human Rights Council and the Third Committee. This is particularly important in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We therefore welcome this dialogue.

We are deeply concerned that the challenges faced by the UN secretariat and the human rights system due to the current liquidity crisis of the UN Secretariat, resulting from unpaid dues by Member States, are significantly compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is crucial to ensure that the UN human rights system continues to perform effectively, when it is needed the most.

Particularly, the OHCHR’s ability to deliver on all of its activities - including those stemming from Council and General Assembly resolutions - is necessary to ensure the promotion, protection and fulfilment of all human rights and leaving no one behind.

Mdm. Chairperson-elect,

In what ways do the UN liquidity crisis and COVID-19 impact the work of the Third Committee? And how can we together address the impact on the UN human rights pillar as a whole?

I thank you.
