Mdm. President,
Denmark align ourselves with the statement made by the EU.
Denmark would like to thank the Special Rapporteur Mr. Forst for his hard work.
We are greatly concerned about the increasing pressure on civic space and fundamental human rights around the globe. Human rights defenders face killings, violence and threats of reprisals. This calls for our immediate action. Protection of human rights defenders should therefore be a priority of this Council.
Global initiatives and efforts must translate into action on the ground. Human rights defenders are agents for the realization of the 2030 Agenda and play a vital role in the local context, including in conflict and post-conflict situations where they contribution to peace and sustainable development.
We have read your report with great interest. We fully agree that defenders in conflict and post-conflict situations are particular exposed and demand greater recognition for their work. But just as much they need reassurance of their safety.
Mr. Forst – What action can this Council and the States take, individually and in cooperation, to better ensure the protection of human right defenders operating in such situations?
Thank you.
