Madam President
I have the honor to deliver this statement on behalf of the Nordic and Baltic countries – Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, and my own country Denmark.
We continue to be deeply concerned by the findings of the Fact Finding Mission on Myanmar and call on Myanmar to fully implement all its recommendations and to pursue accountability through credible independent national and international criminal justice mechanisms.
We urge Myanmar to fully comply with the provisional measures of the International Court of Justice. We reiterate the need for full implementation of the Rakhine Advisory Commission’s recommendations.
Myanmar is undergoing a fragile democratic transition. We urge all political stakeholders in Myanmar to ensure inclusive, free, fair and credible elections, enabling the participation of the entire electorate without discrimination.
We remain concerned by the Fact Finding Mission’s findings on the implications of hate speech and the role of private social media. We reiterate the need for consolidated solutions to online incitement to violence and hatred.
Madame High Commissioner, how can the Council best support inclusive elections in Myanmar?
Thank you
