33rd Session
Item 4: General Debate
Statement by Denmark

Thank you, Mr. President
Denmark fully aligns itself with the EU statement.
As already stated in the joint Nordic intervention on Syria during the interactive dialogue, we are appalled by the suffering and human rights violations in Syria.
Denmark reiterates our call for the release of all arbitrarily detained persons in Bahrain, including the Danish-Bahraini citizen Mr. Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja; a victim of torture who needs treatment and rehabilitation.
We reiterate our encouragement to Egypt to take further steps to ensure the respect for fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution, including the right to a fair trial.
Denmark remains concerned with the ongoing human rights violations in Iran; The high number of executions and the use of physical punishment remain a source of deep concern.
Increasing Israeli settlement activity is deeply concerning and goes directly against recommendations in the recent Quartet Report. We urge all duty bearers, Israelis and Palestinians, to protect the human rights of Palestinians.”

We are very disturbed about the serious human rights violations in Burundi. We urge all parties to commit to a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The resumption of violence in South Sudan is of utmost concern to us. Military and political leaders on all sides must work to stop the abuses committed by their forces.
We continue to urge the government of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to take immediate steps to halt all human rights violations in the country.
We remain deeply concerned with the serious and worrying human rights situation in Eastern Ukraine and the illegally annexed Crimea. International Human Rights actors should be granted full and free access throughout Ukraine, including Crimea.
Thank you
