Denmark's statement at the UNHCR Pledging Conference 7 December 2021

UNHCR Pledging Conference 2021
DENMARK
Check against delivery

Thank you Chair,
This is a very challenging time. The number of displaced people continues to rise. Protracted as well and new humanitarian and climate crisis calls for our urgent response – and it calls for global solidarity, burden and responsibility sharing.
The COVID19 pandemic and its socio economic consequences affect all of us. But in particular refugees and displaced persons, including women and girls, already in vulnerable situations.
The substantive support for the important work of UNHCR has never been more evident. Let me here also commend UNHCR for ‘staying and delivering’ under very difficult circumstances. Including in Afghanistan and Ethiopia.

Chair, High Commissioner,
UNHCR is Denmark’ largest humanitarian partner - and Denmark has a longstanding and deep partnership with UNHCR.
A partnership that we are about to renew with a new multi-year partnership agreement.
Under this partnership agreement – and subject to annual parliamentary approval - the Danish government will provide UNHCR with an annual contribution of 510 million Danish kroner from 2022 to 2026 - approximately 78 million USD every year. A total amount of 2.55 billion kroner over the five-year period.
For many years, Denmark has provided UNCHR with un-earmarked, flexible and multi-year support. And we will continue to do this under the new partnership agreement. This ensures funding predictability and operational flexibility.
We provide this type of funding in line with our Grand Bargain commitments.  And because it is the most efficient and sustainable type of funding.
We have great confidence in UNHCR’s ability to ensure protection and durable solutions for refugees, and as a facilitator for comprehensive responses to forced displacement in line with the Global Compact on Refugees.

Chair, High Commissioner
Denmark is a small country, yet we are currently UNHCR’s 6th largest government donor.
We encourage other countries to step up – in particular with un-earmarked, flexible and multiyear funding.

Let me end by expressing our sincere appreciation for UNHCR staff carrying out life-saving work under often difficult circumstances.
I thank you.
