HRC: Denmark delivers statement on Ukraine on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic countries
Interactive dialogue on the oral update by the High Commissioner on the findings of the OHCHR report on the situation of human rights in Ukraine
8 January 2025
Joint statement on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic countries
Delivered by Permanent Representative of Denmark, Ib Petersen
Thank you, President,
I am delivering this statement on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic countries.
For more than 1,000 days, Russia has been violating the UN Charter, human rights and international humanitarian law in its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
For more than 1,000 days, Ukrainians have been facing immense suffering, while also demonstrating incredible resilience and courage.
We thank the High Commissioner for the update and reiterate our strong support for the work of the OHCHR in Ukraine. Documenting violations of human rights and international humanitarian law is crucial to ensure accountability of Russia and its accomplices.
We are appalled by the latest OHCHR report documenting human rights violations, notably on widespread and systematic torture as well as a significant increase in reports of executions, perpetrated by Russia. We demand that Russia grants independent monitors full and regular access to all detention facilities, in accordance with its obligations under international humanitarian law.
We condemn in the strongest terms Russia’s use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas, including glide bombs, and the continuous massive waves of attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure, causing misery and extensive civilian casualties. We call on Russia to take all feasible precautions to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, according to its obligations under international humanitarian law, withdraw its troops from the entire territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders and cease all hostilities.
The Nordic-Baltic countries remain unwavering in our support for Ukraine’s struggle for freedom.
Thank you.
