HRC48: Denmark remains deeply concerned by the human rights situation in Eastern Ukraine and in illegally annexed Crimea

UN Human Rights Council 48th session
Interactive Dialogue on the High Commissioner’s Update on Ukraine

Intervention by Denmark

Madame High Commissioner,
Denmark remains deeply concerned by the human rights situation in Eastern Ukraine and in illegally annexed Crimea.
We regret the military build-up by Russia along the Ukrainian border and in illegally annexed Crimea, the forced recruitment of civilians into armed groups and persisting ceasefire violations and casualties.
We repeat our concerns over the continued reports of arbitrary detention, unfair trials and use of torture. We condemn the arbitrary detention by Russia of five Crimean Tatar leaders and up to 50 people in September.
Denmark is unwavering in our support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders. We reiterate the need for full implementation of the Minsk Agreements, and we call on Russia to assume its responsibility in this regard.
Madame High Commissioner, what can the international community do to ensure accountability for the suspected perpetrators of human rights abuses in Eastern Ukraine and illegally annexed Crimea?
Thank you.
