HRC48: Denmark supports joint statement on the importance of a more integrated approach to human rights and the SDGs
UN Human Rights Council 48th session
Item 3 General Debate
Briefing by ECOSOC President, His Excellency Collen Vixen Kelapile
22 September 2021
JOINT STATEMENT BY LUXEMBOURG
Madame President,
I am pleased to make this statement on behalf of the following members of the core group for the resolution on human rights and the 2030 Agenda: Azerbaijan, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Ecuador, Fiji, Portugal, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Thailand, Uruguay and my own country, Luxembourg.
We thank the ECOSOC President, Amb. Kelapile, for his briefing today.
One of the tasks of ECOSOC is to encourage universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. At the same time, the international human rights mechanisms can make essential contributions to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in accordance with States’ human rights obligations.
The importance of the interrelated and mutually reinforcing relationship between the promotion and protection of human rights and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda has only been underlined by the COVID-19 pandemic.
As was concluded at the third meeting of the Human Rights Council on human rights and the 2030 Agenda in January this year, the commitment of States to their human rights obligations is paramount to respond effectively to the shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic, to recover better and to achieve the targets set out in the 2030 Agenda.
That calls for strong collaboration between ECOSOC and the Human Rights Council, and for ensuring that the work of ECOSOC, and the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, is grounded in human rights.
This Council will continue to discuss how best to promote a more integrated approach to human rights and the pursuit of the SDGs, next time at the fourth intersessional meeting on human rights and the 2030 Agenda, and will again make the report of those discussions available to the High Level Political Forum.
Thank you.
