HRC49: Denmark adresses Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Turkey, Libya, Yemen and Somalia under Item 2 debate.

UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
49th Session
Item 2: General Debate
Statement by Denmark

Denmark aligns itself with the EU statement and thanks the High Commissioner for her report.

Denmark is deeply disturbed by the Russian aggression in Ukraine and the dire human rights situation in the country.

We remain concerned about the deteriorated human rights situation in Venezuela. We call for full protection of human rights for all.

We urge Nicaragua to release political detainees and protect human rights, and to ensure accountability for the human rights violations since April 2018.

In Turkey we are concerned by the arrests of democratically elected politicians, human rights defenders and journalists. Turkey must implement rulings from the ECHR. The rights of faith based minorities and NGOs must be respected.

We urge all parties to the conflicts in Libya and Yemen to fully respect human rights and humanitarian law. The protection of civilians, migrants, refugees and IDP’s, by all parties is crucial, as is unhindered humanitarian access.

In Somalia, we are concerned about the delayed election and reports of intimidation and arrests of opposition candidates, journalists and civil society.

Thank you
