HRC49: Denmark and the rest of the human rights and 2030 Agenda core group underscore that the 2030 Agenda is grounded in human rights

UN Human Rights Council 49th Session
General debate on item 3: Report on intersessional meeting on human rights and the 2030 Agenda
Intervention by Luxembourg on behalf of the core group for the Resolution on Human Rights and Implementation of the 2030 Agenda (Azerbaijan, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Ecuador, Fiji, Luxembourg, Portu-gal, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Thailand and Uruguay)

Mr President,
I am pleased to make this statement on behalf of Azerbaijan, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Ecuador, Fiji, Portugal, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Thailand, Uruguay and my own country Luxembourg, all members of the core group for the resolution on pro-motion and protection of human rights and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The 2030 Agenda is grounded in human rights and affirms that the 17 Sustainable Development Goals seek to realise the human rights of all. Our Common Agenda re-affirms this by calling for a new social contract to be anchored in human rights. The pledge to leave no one behind and to reach those furthest behind first reflects the fundamental human rights principles of non-discrimination and equality. The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the inequalities within our societies and accelerating the realisation of the 2030 Agenda is essential during the recovery phase of the pandem-ic.
We welcome the summary report of the fourth intersessional meeting for dialogue and cooperation on human rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Develop-ment, held on 18th January this year. The meeting highlighted the importance of in-vesting in sustainable recovery, advancing gender equality and strengthening partnerships especially after the severe socio-economic consequences of the pandemic. The meeting outlined the need for states to mobilise resources, both domestically and through international cooperation, using all tools at their disposal, to invest in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda to aid recovery from COVID-19. The invest-ment of their resources into their civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights obligations should be guided by accurate and disaggregated data.
We believe that much can be achieved when we share our experiences and ensure close collaboration. We look forward to the report of the intersessional meeting be-ing transferred to the high-level political forum on sustainable development and to the intersessional meeting in January 2023.
Thank you.
