HRC49: Denmark condemns in the strongest possible terms Russia’s deliberate and indiscriminate targeting of civilians in Ukraine
UN Human Rights Council, 49th session
Interactive Dialogue with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on her oral update on Ukraine
30 March 2022
Intervention by Denmark
Mr. President,
Denmark aligns itself with the statement made by the EU. We thank the High Commissioner for her update.
Denmark condemns in the strongest possible terms Russia’s deliberate and indiscriminate targeting of civilians in this unlawful and immoral war of conquest which serves no purpose – and no principle – but the naked quest for power.
We must and we will ensure that evidence of violations of international humanitarian law, including war crimes, and of human rights violations and abuses is collected and preserved, and that the perpetrators are held to account. Denmark welcomes the ICC investigation and the establishment by this Council of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate all alleged violations of human rights in this context by the Human Rights Council.
We urge Russia to immediately cease its military aggression and fully respect Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
Madame High Commissioner, how can the international community facilitate safe and unhindered access of humanitarian assistance, and secure humanitarian corridors, to all parts of Ukraine?
Thank you.
