General debate: item 4
Intervention by Denmark
[Check against delivery]

Mr. President,

Denmark aligns itself with the EU statement and refers to the Nordic-Baltic statements in the interactive dialogues related to Myanmar, Ethiopia, Syria, Burundi, Ukraine and Belarus.

We strongly condemn Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine. We are deeply disturbed by Russia’s aggression and the alarming human rights situation stemming from it. We also urge Russian authorities to ensure the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Russia.

We are deeply concerned by the human rights situation in China, particularly in Hong Kong, Tibet and Xinjiang. We welcome the report by the OHCHR on Xinjiang and fully support its recommendations, which China must implement without delay. We call for diligent follow-up by this Council and the international community at large.

We are deeply concerned about gross and systematic human rights violations in DPRK.

On Iran, we condemn the killing of Mahsa Amini as well as the violent crackdown on protests. We call on Iran to respect the human rights of all Iranians, including women and girls.

We remain deeply concerned about the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia and reiterate our strong opposition to the death penalty. We also note with concern the continued persecution of civil society activists.

We call for the release of arbitrarily detained persons in Bahrain, including the Danish-Bahraini citizen Mr. Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja.

We continue to oppose Israel’s illegal settlement expansion, demolitions and evictions in the oPt and are deeply concerned by the significant reduction of the Palestinians’ civic space. We urge the Palestinian Authority to respect the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful association and assembly.

Thank you
