HRC51: Denmark condemns the Belarusian Government’s systematic repression of political dissent
UN Human Rights Council,
Interactive dialogue with OHCHR on the situation in Belarus
Statement by Denmark
Delivered by the Permanent Representative of Denmark
Denmark aligns itself with the statement by the European Union and the Nordic-Baltic countries.
We thank the Special Rapporteur for the update on the situation in Belarus and reiterate our strong support for the mandate.
We remain deeply concerned by the continued deterioration of the human rights situation in Belarus, including the Government’s decision of May this year to expand the use of the death penalty to include the legally vague “attempts at terrorism”. This constitutes yet another gruesome attempt to silence dissent. Further, we condemn the role of Belarus as staging ground for Russia’s missile launches and illegal military aggression against its neighboring country Ukraine.
The Belarusian Government continues to systematically crush dissent and repress political opponents, civil society and independent media in an environment of complete impunity. We urge the Belarusian authorities to effectively and independently investigate human rights violations, to hold perpetrators accountable and to release all political prisoners.
How does the Special Rapporteur view the consequences for Belarusian human rights defenders of the expected law on removal of citizenship?
Thank you.
