HRC51: Denmark stresses the importance of collecting, preserving and analysing evidence relating to atrocity crimes in Ukraine

UN Human Rights Council 51st session
Interactive Dialogue on the High Commissioner’s Update on Ukraine

Intervention by Denmark

Madame High Commissioner,
Denmark condemns in the strongest possible terms the atrocities committed in Ukraine in the context of Russia’s war of aggression. We are devastated by the discoveries of mass graves, recently in Izium, and the increasing number of civilian casualties across Ukraine.
We condemn Russia’s illegal sham “referenda” in Ukraine and illegal attempted annexation of four Ukrainian regions, which we will never recognise. We reiterate our strong support to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Denmark supports all measures to ensure accountability for human rights violations and violations of international humanitarian law in Ukraine. We stress the importance of collecting, preserving and analysing evidence relating to atrocity crimes.
Together with other UN Member States, Denmark cofounded the Group of Friends for ‘Accountability following the Aggression against Ukraine’. A forum for UN Member States to promote synergies between various measures initiated to ensure accountability for crimes committed in Ukraine.
Madame High Commissioner, what more can the international community do to ensure accountability for suspected perpetrators of human rights abuses?
Thank you.
