UPR39: Denmark recommends Suriname to improve detention facilities, provide Comprehensive Sexuality Education and to ratify the Convention against Torture

Universal Periodic Review, 39th session
Human Rights Council

UPR of Suriname, 1st of November 2021
Intervention by Denmark

[Check against delivery]

Denmark welcomes the delegation of Suriname and commends it for improving conditions in its prisons and detention facilities. However, we are concerned that problems related to overcrowding and insufficient sanitation persist.

Therefore, Denmark recommends the Government to bring its prison and detention conditions fully in line with international human rights norms and standards, including the Nelson Mandela Rules.

Furthermore, providing quality education, including comprehensive sexuality education explaining consent and the importance of using contraceptives, is key to empowering all women and girls.

Therefore, Denmark recommends the Government to provide access to comprehensive sexual education as part of the school curriculum.

Finally, Denmark recommends the Government to ratify the Convention against Torture.

Allow me in this regard to highlight that the Convention against Torture Initiative (CTI) stands ready to explore avenues to assist Suriname in advancing on this issue, if deemed helpful.

We wish Suriname a successful review.

I thank you.
