UPR43: Denmark gives UPR-recommendations to Romania

Universal Periodic Review, 43th session
Human Rights Council

UPR of Romania, 2nd May 2023
Intervention by Denmark
[Check against delivery]

Mr. President,

Denmark welcomes the delegation of Romania and thanks it for its presentation.

Denmark would like to recognise and welcome Romania’s participation in the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence.

Denmark notes that there has been no anti-discrimination strategy or related plan in Romania since 2014 while homo- and transphobia in Romanian society has increased.

Denmark recommends Romania to:

1. Adopt a new national strategy on equality, inclusion and diversity, taking into account all genders, religions, ethnicities, and sexual orientation and gender identity.
2. Take steps to introduce evidence-based comprehensive sexuality education in the curriculum for secondary education, as well as to ensure sufficient teacher training on comprehensive sexuality education.

Denmark wishes Romania a successful review.

I thank you.
