Academic employee to the Disarmament team at the Danish UN mission in Geneva

The Danish UN mission in Geneva is seeking to recruit an academic employee (full-time job) for a 9-month local employment (maternity cover) starting on 18 March 2024.

The work of the Danish UN mission in Geneva covers a wide spectrum of multilateral areas with an emphasis on human rights (UN Human Rights Council, OHCHR, treaty bodies), humanitarian efforts (UNHCR, ICRC, IOM, OCHA), trade policy issues (WTO, EIF), health (WHO, UNAIDS, Global Fund ) and disarmament.

Geneva is headquarter for the UN work on disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control. It takes place in the primary body for disarmament, the Conference on Disarmament (CD), as well as in negotiations within the framework of specific treaties (for example the Biological Weapons Convention, the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, the Convention on Cluster Munitions and the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention).

The maternity cover covers the entire spectrum of disarmament-related tasks as well as security policy aspects of cyber, tech and space. In the tech area, the employee will be the Mission's anchor for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), just as there will be tasks related to multilateral negotiation processes in the digital area.

The work consists of independent negotiation tasks in close cooperation with the management of the Mission, relevant departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as UN missions of other countries. In the area of disarmament, the main tasks in 2024 will revolve around two particular conventions. Firstly, Denmark - together with Argentina - plays a role as a facilitator in relation to the working group for strengthening the Biological Weapons Convention. Second, 2024 will be an important year for the Mine Ban Convention, with the Fifth Review Conference taking place in November 2024 in Cambodia. Denmark will be involved in the preparations, as Denmark has recently joined the Convention's Committee on the Enhancement of Cooperation and Assistance.

Required qualifications:
• Knowledge of the UN system and more particularly the area of disarmament would be an advantage
• Strong negotiation and cooperative skills
• Ability to work independently and prioritize
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Excellent command of English both oral and written
• Command of one of the Scandinavian languages

Terms of employment:
• You will be offered full time employment for the duration of the maternity cover (9 months)
• The contract is a local contract in accordance with the Mission's rules and policies
